1.Tokyo Olympics to be held on July 23, 2021

The International Olympic Committee announced the new dates for Tokyo Olympics 2020 from July 23, 2021, to August 8, 2021. Last week the International Olympic Committee and the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee jointly issued a statement declaring the postponement of Olympics due to the widespread COVID-19 crisis. Paralympic Games will be celebrated from August 24, 2021, to September 5, 2021.

2.Facebook to invest $100 million in journalism

Facebook has pledged to invest $100 million in the news industry as publishers are expected to hit hard by the economic fallout due to coronavirus outbreak, according to The Verge. $25 million will be provided in grant funding for local news through the Facebook Journalism Project, while the remaining $75 million will come in the form of ‘additional marketing spend’ to worldwide news organizations. It announced the first series of grants last week, when it said that it would be giving $5,000 to 50 local newsrooms across the US and Canada to cover “unexpected costs” associated with covering the viral outbreak.

3.Google’s parent Alphabet to donate $340 mn in ad credit to SMBs worldwide

Google parent Alphabet will provide $340 million in Google ad credits to small and medium businesses (SMBs) worldwide on its platform in reaction to the COVID-19 crisis, as reported by Brandinginasia.com. Additionally, several other forms of financial assistance including $250 million in ad grants to help the World Health Organization (WHO) and more than 100 government agencies globally provide critical information on how to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other measures to help local communities.

4.Airbnb pauses its marketing and hiring amid COVID-19

Airbnb has decided to halt all its marketing activities and pause its hiring as it tries to save $800mn, as reported by Reuters. The founders of the home-rental start up will forego their salaries for the next six months while top execs will take a 50% pay cut, as it looks to mitigate the impact of the Covid-19 outbreak on the business. Airbnb said that it’s going to provide free or subsidized housing for coronavirus responders, according to a blog post by the company.
